Contemporary Garden Design
Harpenden, Hertfordshire

We are very pleased to present this contemporary garden design in our portfolio. We planted the garden in July 2019 and it is already looking lovely!

The Brief

Our client approached us to design the garden for their newly built house and wanted a ‘soft contemporary’ style. They very much liked the natural stone walling they had seen in other gardens in our portfolio. Entertaining would be an important part of their lives and they wanted a relaxed lounge area and a dining area. They also asked for improved privacy in the garden as it was overlooked. Finally, the client was keen to have lighting, to extend the use of the garden in the evenings and so they could look out at the garden from the house.

‘Soft Contemporary’ Garden Design

Working with the client, we created a large patio for the entertaining spaces and used the natural stone wall and planting to divide the garden. In addition, we used the planting and the feature walls to make the entertaining areas feel more intimate. We also created short paths leading from the patio to the lawn area. By planting a variety of specimen trees along the boundary, we increased the privacy of the garden and softened the fence. We chose perennials, grasses and multi-stemmed trees to create the relaxed garden design the client wanted.

Lighting Design

We concentrated the lighting on the feature wall and specimen trees. The lights pick up the natural textures and emphasise the construction of the natural stone wall.
